Practice and Procedures

Organisation & Planning

We plan our curriculum in three levels. We agree a long-term plan for each key stage. This indicates what topics are to be taught in each term, and to which groups of children. We review our long-term plan on an annual basis.

With our medium-term plans, we give clear guidance on the topics that will be covered in each unit of work.

Our short-term plans are those that our teachers write on a weekly or daily basis.  We use these to set out the learning objectives for each session, the activities that will take place, the relevant thinking school links, differentiation and  to identify what resources and activities we are going to use in the lesson.

In KS1 & KS2 we teach the subjects in individual blocks with set times each week allocated to the different subjects.  We do complete cross curricular tasks regularly but attempt to link these in with the subject times that are relevant.

Thinking Schools

The Swaminarayan School has been credited with a thinking school award and we have a number of initiatives relating to this which we include throughout our lessons and curriculum.  These include but are not limited to the use of:

  •          Thinking Maps
  •          Tony Ryan’s Thinker’s Keys
  •          Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
  •          Bloom’s Taxonomy
  •          Growth Mindset

Thinking skills are taught throughout the entire school and are implemented not as a separate subject but integrated across all aspects of the curriculum.
